作者简介：

博斯特里奇（Ian Bostridge，1964—）被公认为当今世界最著名的男高音歌唱家之一，尤其擅长艺术歌曲演唱。除在世界各地频繁举行独唱音乐会外，还灌制了大量唱片录音，得到业界高度赞扬与好评。他于1990年在牛津大学获得哲学博士学位（历史学专业），但从1993年开始步入职业歌唱家行列。他的文字著述包括《巫术及其转型：1650—1750》（1997）、《歌手的笔记》（2011）、《舒伯特的：对一种执念的剖析》（2014）、《歌曲与自我：一位歌手对音乐与表演的反思》（2023）。他曾任牛津大学的音乐人文教授（2014—2015），并持续为《泰晤士报文学增刊》和《卫报》供稿。

The most notorious of these apparitions in real life was the “Spectre of the Brocken,” the Brocken being the highest peak of the Harz Mountains, notorious haunt of witches and sprites, and memorialised as such in Goethe’s Faust. Wanderers on the mountain reported observing a vast and shadowy figure which would spookily move about and mimic their own gestures. Coleridge made two, unsuccessful, attempts to get a look at it in 1799. The phantom, still observable today, is in fact just that: a haze or mist or cloud whose constituent water droplets reflect images projected by the sun, swollen to enormous apparent size by tricks of perspective. The Spectre of the Brocken is, then, “but a reflex of yourself,” as de Quincey put it in his Suspiria de Profundis (1845), making paradoxical Romantic us...

In both, a flexible musical figure is used as an analogy for the central material image which Schubert has selected from the poem. With “Erlkonig” it’s hammering repeated octaves (murderous for the pianist’s right hand on a modern piano); for Gretchen, a repetitive semiquaver arabesque. The technique is so familiar, so taken for granted, that it’s worth analyzing it just a little (especially as it is the basis of so much in Winterreise, in many, though not all, of its songs).

Most of Schubert’s mature, published songs start with some sort of a piano introdudction. There’s a good aesthetic reason for this, one which takes us back to the discussion of “Gretchen am Spinnrade” (Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel) in the last chapter. The introduction gives us the musical idea, puts it out there to be absorbed as music, just music; the voice comes in, and tells us how we should read that musical idea, focusing our attention on a physical or emotional scenario.

The verse that follows tells us very clearly that this has been, this piano prelude, a typically Schubertian device, one which represents something not just in the outside world but also in the protagonist’s – and potentially in the listener’s – heart and head. A sort of prolepsis – the words have been anticipate...

The present tense melts into the past – “I seek in vain” becomes “I dreamed so many sweet dreams.” C minor becomes E major, the first time in the cycle that a song starts in a major key; the fact that it is a semitone above the relative major (which would have been E-flat) lifts the song, taking us to another place, another time, a translation best effected not by pausing between the songs in performance but by juxtaposing them as intimately as possible.

The gentle rustling – of the leaves of last summer rather than the winter branches of the present, specified later in the poem – is then itself gently interrupted by horn calls, the Romantic sound par excellence, the call of the past, of memory, sensuality at a distance, “distance, absence and regret,” as Charles Rosen puts it in his book ...

The chapter itself is called “Snow,” and it creates, suggests, hints at a parallel between the predicament of the wanderer in Winterreise, compelled by his own nature to wander through a winter landscape, and that of Castorp, Mann’s protagonist, tubercular sufferer, who has sunk into the comfortable but deathly embrace of the snowbound sanatorium where most of the story plays out. In “Snow,” Castorp escapes from his confinement, venturing outside, and gets lost; in so doing he confronts ultimate questions. Reading “Snow” is, if nothing more, a good imaginative and mental workout for singing, or experiencing, Winterreise.

From around 800 to 1200 northern Europe experienced unusually mild and stable weather, perhaps the warmest four centuries of the last eight thousand years: the so-called Mediaeval Warm Period, an era of settlement, expansion, exploration, and agricultural plenty.
